ADOLESCENTS AND GAMBLING

Adolescents can be affected by gambling related issues in several ways. Early exposure to excessive and problematic gambling behavior by friends and family members often increase the risk of developing potential problems. Despite several laws being in place that require participants in regulated gambling activities to be a certain age, there are several other opportunities for those who do not meet those requirements to gamble.

This program will discuss the high rates of participation and problematic development among adolescents and explore ways to address the topic with this vulnerable population. Identification of resources and approaches to assist prevention and treatment of adolescents will be identified.

Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

• Become familiar with gambling and factors included in the development of problematic gambling and video gaming, specifically among students
• Become familiar with the types of legislated gambling in Pennsylvania
• Discuss the impact of gambling and gambling elements in video games on the younger population, and how this may also lead to future issues
• Identify possible warning signs and how to address the issue with kids/teens/adolescents/emerging adults
• Develop an understanding of the unique aspects of addressing these forms of gambling as an aspect of treatment
• Have awareness of available local resources
