Problem Gambling Training:
Current Trends & A Family Perspective
In October 2017 a major gambling expansion bill was passed in Pennsylvania, allowing for the possibility of more legalized gambling than ever before. Over the past several years, we have seen the launch of several new types of gambling, resulting in a dramatic increase in availability and participation. Unfortunately, we have also seen more individuals, and their families, experiencing problems.
Gambling issues often result in financial, social, emotional, and physical concerns. These problems often expand beyond the individual, and can negatively impact friends, family members and the surrounding community. When dealing with a loved one’s disorder, friends and family members often put the needs of the individual above their own.
It is vital for treatment and prevention professionals to not only be aware of the current trends of gambling participation to better serve clients, but also to have a better understanding of the activities that may lead to new populations of clients and the resources that are currently available. This program will discuss ways that family and friends can help to support someone who is experiencing gambling problems, while at the same time protecting themselves.
