Research has increasingly supported the view that addiction is a disease of the brain. More specifically, the brain disease model of addiction has yielded effective preventive measures, treatment interventions, and public health policies to address substance-use disorders. Meanwhile, this model has been underutilized as a framework for understanding and treating gambling disorder. This workshop will review the clinical utility of incorporating a brain disease model of addiction for diagnosing gambling disorder and substance use for clients with co-occurring diagnosis.
