Supporting Those Who Serve
Members of the military, veterans, and their families often face unique stressors—deployment,
relocation, reintegration into civilian life, financial pressures, and mental health challenges.
These factors can sometimes increase the risk of problem gambling.
The Council on Compulsive Gambling of PA is committed to raising awareness, reducing
stigma, and connecting military communities to trusted resources across Pennsylvania.
If you or someone you know may be struggling with gambling, help is available.
Understanding Problem Gambling
Problem gambling occurs when gambling behaviors begin to negatively impact a person’s
financial stability, relationships, work, or mental health.
Warning Signs May Include:
• Gambling more money than intended
• Difficulty stopping or controlling gambling
• Borrowing money or experiencing financial hardship
• Gambling to cope with stress, trauma, or emotional pain
• Relationship conflicts due to gambling
For veterans, problem gambling may also be connected to:
• Transitioning from military to civilian life
• Post-deployment stress
• Co-occurring behavioral health conditions
Why Military & Veterans May Be at Higher Risk
Research suggests some factors common in military life may increase vulnerability to gambling-
related harm.
These can include:
• High-stress environments
• Frequent relocation
• Isolation from support networks
• Financial transitions after service
• Co-occurring mental health conditions such as PTSD or depression
Addressing gambling harm early can help protect financial security, family relationships, and
overall well-being.
