Youth, Young Adults, and Problem Gambling: Sports, Online & Video Games

Youth and young adults can be affected by gambling related issues in several ways. Early exposure to excessive and problematic gambling behaviors by friends and family members often increases the risk of developing potential problems. Recent studies indicate that teens and young adults whose parents gamble on a regular basis develop problems at nearly twice the rate of those whose parents do not gamble. And despite several laws being in place that require participants in regulated gambling activities to be a certain age, there are several other opportunities for those who do not meet those requirements to gamble. The topic of gambling deserves the same frank, direct approach used when talking to a teen about other risky behaviors. This program will discuss the high rates of participation and problematic development among students and explore ways to address the topic with this vulnerable population.
