Ethics, Suicide Prevention & Self Care Considerations

 

The importance of ethical considerations in all human services is a daily focus and effort; this especially applies to those in treatment for gambling concerns. In the helping professions we should all be focused on a standard of ethical excellence in practice with those we serve.

Part of effective and ethical care includes our work to assist those with suicidal ideation and those with gambling problems have higher attempt rates then the general population in the United States. Warning signs, risk and protective factors, and resources aimed at prevention, intervention and reduction of suicide prevalence will be covered.

Our discussion will focus on the functions of ethical codes, values/morals and laws impacting the gambling treatment professional, the agency and those we serve. Case studies and ethical decision-making models will be discussed throughout the course, as will the International Problem Gambling and Gaming  Certification Board (IPGGC) code of ethics, to help guide the practitioner in developing ethical decision making in practice.

Finally, this workshop will address stress, moral injury and our work helping those with problem gambling, and the importance of incorporating self-care tools and methods into our practice and creating cultures of selfcare in our agencies.

Continuing Education

This program is offered for 6.0 hours of social work continuing education through co-sponsorship of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work, a Council on Social Work Education-accredited school and, therefore, a PA pre-approved provider of social continuing education. Attendees must attend the entire event – partial CE’s will not be issued.
